Implant

What is Dental Implant?

The implant is basically screw-shaped titanium material. It's attached to the jawbone so that a new tooth can be placed to change the missing tooth that has been lost for some reason. This screw-shaped implant is placed, it's a process that can be usually waited a few months, and prosthesis veneers that serve as the main teeth are placed then. Because the implant is expected to integrate with the jawbone first. It's an ideal option for patients who have lost one or more teeth. Its function and appearance are entirely focused on the patient's ability to feel and use it as one of the original teeth.

How Is Implant Surgery Performed?

The operation is performed under local anesthesia or sedation, and it's mostly an outpatient surgery. Before the operation, a detailed oral examination is done and an X-Ray is requested from the patient. Measurements of jawbones and other teeth are made during this.

Implant surgery can be performed in one or two stages. In the first, a temporary crown is used. In the second, the gum is covered over the implant. A dental bridge is made and removed later. The healing period mentioned above is 3 months on average for the lower jaw and 6 months on average for the upper jaw. However, this situation may vary from patient to patient, and it's also known that both the implant and the coating can be applied on the same day.

Titanium material is preferred due to its suitability for the human body. Zirconium coatings are used sometimes to help titanium. Actually, zirconium is useful for narrow jawbones. It has so similar white color to the patient's natural tooth. It's highly durable, and no color change is seen over time.

What are the types of Dental Implants?

  • Endosteal implant is the most used classical type, titanium screws are placed in the jawbone tightly.
  • Subperiosteal implant is applied when there is no necessary jawbone support concerning the first method. Placed under the gum and above the bone.

What is the Dental Implant healing process like?

Dental Implant surgery includes more than one step treatment. Start from 3 months and last up to about 1 year. The patient may need to get support from dental specialists in other fields such as Periodontology during the process.

After the implant is placed, pain, bruising and swelling may occur. It's recommended to not consume hard and hot foods and drinks for a while. Painkillers are given if the patient needs them.

Implant care is the same as taking care of any natural tooth. An implant does not decay but other dental diseases can be seen. It is necessary to care for it and carefully brush it twice a day. Regular check-ups are made by the dentist during the recovery period.

Dental Implant surgery may not be suitable for every patient. It's also possible to get a full implant which is a very expensive option for patients who lost more than one tooth or who need to replace all their teeth. Dental bridges or dentures may be preferred in this situation.

It's commonly known that the implant can last for a very long time if the patient takes good care and brushes his teeth regularly.

The success rate of implant treatment is not high in people for example with diabetes. In addition, there may be lots of problems when not paying attention to oral health.
