Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is simply a condition in which the breasts (single or double) in men are as large as in women. It occurs as a result of a hormone mismatch between estrogen and androgen. It is not cancer-induced growth. Since the presence of breasts in men is dysfunctional, considering the social life of the patient, it can cause psychological problems and can be seen at any age. The operation to prevent and remove this is called Gynecomastia. It is not the same as Adipomastia.

It is common in adolescence and old ages (between 50 and 70 years). It is often seen in overweight young people due to obesity. Gynecomastia, which is seen in adolescence, usually disappears later on. The operation can be applied to anyone from the age of 18.

Gynecomastia Operation Procedures

Gynecomastia operation is evaluated according to breast size and content (fat and breast tissue). Depending on the patient's condition, it is decided whether liposuction or surgical intervention will be performed. One of the most curious questions is “Is there any medicine for Gynecomastia?” Although there is no approved direct therapeutic drug, some hormone regulators are used for up to two years from the onset of breast growth.

In cases where the breast tissue is not too large, liposuction is performed with sedative drugs. Surgical operation is required for breasts that have become chronic, large or drooping. While the skin on the breast tissue is removed with an incision, the nipples are also reduced and placed in the form of a patch. Thus, a natural image is obtained. Since these procedures can take up to 90 minutes, the surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

What should be considered before and after Gynecomastia surgery?

  • Before the surgery, recommended not to take any blood thinner medicine for 10 days,
  • It is also not preferred to be exposed to the sun for a long time,
  • The surgeon should be informed if the patient has been using any medicine regularly,
  • A non-smoker patient will be a good candidate for any other surgeries.

If the operation is performed with local anesthesia, it is possible to be discharged on the same day. If general anesthesia is used, the patient is discharged the next day. A chest corset is given to be worn continuously for the first 4 weeks. Another 2 weeks, it is enough to use it while only doing heavy activities.

  • After the surgery, It is normal to experience pain and edema in the first days.
  • Heavy sports should be avoided for 2-3 weeks.
  • After the fourth week, you can swim in the pool or in the sea.
  • It will take 6 weeks to return to activities and completely normal life.

As can be seen in other surgical operations, bleeding may occur. A drain is used for this. Antibiotics are given in case of infection. In some cases, deterioration or irregularity of the rib cage can be observed. Mostly, it can be removed with massages.

It can be counted as more affordable now and more reachable like any other aesthetic operation because it became common.

It’s ok to get benefits of doing any sport for Gynecomastia. By doing sports, trying to reduce the breasts as much as possible is the best way. It is recommended to burn the fat accumulated in the chest by using weights and strengthening the chest muscles. This can be planned with the right sports guide. If the mammary gland is too enlarged, doing it will not be beneficial.
