What is Ear Surgery? (Otoplasty)

Ear Surgery is basically the technical name for cosmetic surgery that aims to a protruding ear to fix. In detail; it refers to both surgical and non-surgical procedures to correct defects of the cone and to reshape a deformed outer ear that results from birth and trauma.

There are many surgical techniques and methods available. It can be performed successfully by a few doctors. Otoplasty does not affect hearing ability. The significant thing for a successful operation is that the ears are proportional to the size and shape of the face and head.

The Procedure of Ear Surgery

Ear Surgery methods, as known as Otoplasty, vary from patient to patient. The location of the scars may also change depending on the method chosen. The surgery is performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Children mostly prefer this surgery, so general anesthesia is often used. Local anesthesia can be used for adult patients.

The excess cartilage and skin in the area are removed from the ears by making an incision. The removed cartilage is brought to the ideal position then and closed by suturing. It's reshaped carefully and the targeted structure and natural symmetry are obtained together with all aspects of the ear at the same time. Incision scars are not clearly visible due to the natural fold behind the ear. It even becomes completely invisible when healing is over. The surgery takes approx 1-2 hours depending on the doctor and the patient.

A bandage is given to the patient to place on the head for a few days after the surgery. The stitches have specialized for disappearing on their own. This is a process that is mostly patient-friendly.

Am I a good candidate for Otoplasty?

Ear Surgery can be performed when the ears are fully developed. Around 5 years old is optimum. A person may be a good candidate for this surgery if:

• If has a self-confidence problem due to a prominent ear
• If has problems in the community due to the appearance of a prominent ear
• If over 5 years old
• If the general health is good

Recovery after Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Otoplasty has a quick recovery mostly and the patient is discharged the same day. The ears are covered with bandages to cover the incision area after the surgery. It should be worn for the first 48 hours. It is replaced with an elastic band then to protect the ears from damage for the following one week.

Stitches are dissolved within one week. The elastic band is worn at night to avoid any ear injuries during sleep. There may seen bruising, itching, swelling, and a little bit of disturbance. The doctor gives painkillers if the patient needs them.
